FROM 1974-1984, LEE would paint over 120 whole subway cars throughout the MTA system

During the height of the New York subway art movement, some works on trains survived for several months, sometimes close to a whole year before they were removed, or "buffed."  Lee for the most part documented many of his whole car murals while in active rush hour service with his Instamatic camera. Those photos from the IRT and BMT lines are pictured below.

Director Manfred Kirchheimer captured rare footage of elaborate "whole cars" running throughout New York City and switch operations in the yards. Here's a small glimpse opportunity at what Lee's painted train cars looked like in motion in the mid and late 1970s. 

Many of Lee's whole cars remain undocumented.
